Instructions Following Permanent Ingrown Toenail Removal

  1. The bulky bandage on your foot was secured with a special wrap. If this bandage feels too tight and begins to cause discomfort, you may remove it and cover the area with Neosporin CREAM and a Band Aid. If the bandage sticks, use peroxide to loosen the bandage.
  2. A small amount of bleeding is normal. If the bleeding does not stop, elevate the foot and apply ice to the foot(cover the foot with a light towel or sock to avoid frostbite). If the bleeding continues(which is uncommon), please call our office.
  3. If you have discomfort take TYLENOL and wear an open-toe shoe. Call us if pain is significant. This is uncommon. It has been our experience that patients who have the opportunity to minimize the amount of time on their feet for the first 12 hours following the procedure have the least amount of pain.
  4. You may bathe normally.
  5. Soak your foot twice a day in a basin of warm water and Epsom Salts(3-5 tablespoons) for 15 minutes.
  6. Following the soaking, apply Neosporin CREAM and a Band Aid. You need to continue soaking in this manner until you have your follow up appointment, unless instructed otherwise by your physician.
The soaking process after a permanent removal of an ingrown nail is usually required for 10 days to 2 weeks.
